Shake the Foundations of Our Society!

No, I do not think the perpetrators of Rape should be hanged, that would be the easy way out. I think they should be castrated and sentenced to 99 years of hard labour in Guantanamo Bay where even the most basic Human Rights are revoked for them.

What kind of a society are we living in? Is this the country we want to leave for our future generations, where women have to stay in a constant fear? I don't think so. Ask me what's the solution for our society. The answer does not lie in more police patrolling, it does not lie in fast track courts, it does not even lie in protest marches. Why? Because Rape is happening every day, by a random man, a husband, a male relative, a male neighbour, and like all the rapes that have happened before, the gang rape of this 23 year old woman too will be forgotten. We will protest for 1 day, maybe a week... the police will become active for a month and we will see PCR vans crawling all over the national capital.... our highly revered politicians will display their oratory skills for 2 days and then all of this will be forgotten. What happens to this girl after 6 months will not make it to the newspapers and she will be just another rape victim for us. While her life will be scared forever.

The biggest problem and the cause of rape is the morals on which our society stands. A male child is always wanted... someone to carry the name forward. The man in the family has dictatorial control over the house... a boy can come home at 2 in the night but a girl has a zillion restrictions imposed by the family. Any man brought up in an atmosphere like this is likely to assume that women are to be treated as commodities... to be raped at Will and Whim.

Blaming the government for no action is pointless, blaming the police for not being on their toes is baseless. If you must blame someone then blame the foundations of our society. Blame the culture we so proudly call ours. Blame the mindset of the people. And blame every single man who does not respect the womb which gave birth to him.

Hanging these men does not even come close to the punishment they deserve for their crime. Every single rapist should be castrated in public and made to live every single day of his life in torture- mental and physical. Make them regret their actions with every breath and let their breaths not be numbered. And most importantly lets not forget the victim. Let this incident not be like every other rape which is forgotten in a week because we got bored of it. May Justice Prevail!

  2. well written ..
but the problem is we are all addressing (or trying to address) the root cause of the problem .
    where is the solution ?
and yes i mean SOLUTIONS , which are Practical , real and permanent .
I am sure more patrolling/severe punishment is not a solution.
How do you think can the foundations of our society be recreated with morals and ethics.?

    1. the answer, according to me, lies in our upbringing! and only that will address the root cause. Unless boys and girls are treated as equals this change is not possible. and when i say treat them as equals i don't mean give women reservation or preferential treatment. i mean treat everyone the same.
on a different note, i once saw this random movie which was based on dancing and in that there was a dialogue something on the lines of 'if a guy can hold woman's body that close in a dance and not misbehave, do you not think he will grow up respecting that body?' that's the essence!

  3. Totally agree with your view Surabhi...unless there's this conscious ,mentality of treating both the genders with equality..its bit hard to not being able to see a change in the attitude.. well,we r all concerned bout our mother, sisters , daughters n even friends of the opposite sex, but does the same happen about any other female we just meet randomly for a second or so, or any colleague,co passenger, a stranger at a public place..its become human nature..to just not have that respect..
we have all sorts of celebrations on a birth of a baby boy.wel, he deserves every second of it..but then, why does faces seems to drop when a girl child is born..leave aside celebrating.n i am not just pointing towards rural areas.. just visit any random so called big hospitals in metro cities,n see for yourself the mood in the waiting areas of delivery sections..one will find the answer..!!
The change has to begin with ourselves..then can we expect from the society...
